This is a senior role in our Application Development Team which sits within the Technology Group. The role works across the full development lifecycle to enhance and maintain the company’s commercial software products. This is a hands–on role which is responsible for delivering new commercial software features on time and within a software development process that brings in requirements and knowledge from research and development teams, geoscientists and product and user stakeholders alike.

Responsibilities

  • Actively leads the delivery team by example and ensures team cohesion
  • Works with the project manager to build robust plans and mitigate technical risks
  • Actively leads resolution of complex technical problems
  • Translates user stories and functional requirements into technical designs
  • Ensures estimates and plans are technically accurate and up to date
  • Ensures design and implementation adhere to standards
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate design and coding standards
  • Shares knowledge of the code-base and encourage “shared code ownership”
  • Identifies new techniques and technologies which will improve work practices
  • Takes ownership of code quality and drives continuous improvement
  • Coaches team members to develop Analysis, Development & Testing skills
  • Promotes personal development and identifies key skill gaps across the team
  • Takes line management responsibility for part of the team including regular 1:1s
  • Boosts team morale, collaboration and commitment to achieve agreed goals

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Appropriate qualifications and / or experience in a Software Engineering discipline
  • 10+ years’ experience of software development within a commercial environment
  • 5+ years’ experience in Agile software methods and practices, specifically Scrum
  • Familiarity with modern architecture methods such as TOGAF
  • Experience of working within a self-organising team
  • Knowledge and experience of continuous delivery pipelines such as GitLab
  • Experience of end to end test automation
  • Experience in public cloud architectures including AWS and GCP
  • Implementation of containerised software using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Data led API design and implementation using OpenAPI
  • Demonstrable coaching and mentoring abilities
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Expert level knowledge in at least three of C++, C#, Python, Ruby, TDD, OO, JS
  • Knowledge of big data, messaging, HTML5 and distributed computing highly desirable
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply software design patterns and SOLID principals
  • Good understanding of code smells and refactoring
  • Team and people management of 5 – 20 resources.

Reporting and Relationships

The role reports to the Technical Architect and liaises closely with the Quality Assurance and Agile Project Managers.
